Training Collar for a Smaller Dog ..

When choosing a training collar for a smaller dog, such as a Jack Russell terrier, the pinch collar is the best choice. The "teeth" of the collar communicate in similar terms to how a mother dog correct her puppies or an Alpha dog would correct a subordinate.

However, this type of collar is recommended only for dogs who have their adult teeth. This is usually at 4 to 5 months old. Should you need to use it earlier, you must be gentle when correcting. This is because training a puppy this young is accomplished through positive reinforcements, i.e., soothing or motivating vocal signs.

The pinch collar is most efficient when it has at least 5 links with pronged tips. In regards to training, you should keep the pinch collar and a leash on your dog whenever there is supervision. This way unwanted behaviors can be immediately corrected.

Training your pup involves some tough love, but it correct most negative behaviors. Of course, do not forget to praise your dog whenever it does something right. This will result in a reciprocal relationship that makes both of happy.

If you have a very small dog, such as Maltese, which may weigh only 4 lbs. as a puppy, a pinch collar is not recommended. Eliminating bad behavior in a dog this small involves verbal correction while simultaneously grabbing the scruff of its neck and giving a firm pull.

If you absolutely must use some kind of collar, than purchase a prong collar since it only pinches the skin instead of constricting against the neck. They aren't that easy to find in conventional pet stores, but are available online. You can search below or type "micro prong collar" into any other search engine..
